A headset combines a headphone with microphone. Headsets are made with either a single-earpiece (mono) or a double-earpiece (mono to both ears or stereo). Headsets provide the equivalent functionality of a telephone handset but with handsfree operation. They have many uses including in call centers, telephone operators, military and law enforcement communications staff, and other telephone-intensive jobs. They are also used by in homes by people wishing to have both hands free during a telephone conversation. Headsets can also be used in closed circuit communication systems, such as when an audio engineer communicates with band members in a recording studio using the mixing desk.
